This week I found myself both excited and deeply uncomfortable about the future of work and the technological possibilities for our sector.
I’ve been exploring AI-powered wearables like smart glasses, earbuds, rings, real-time coaching systems (for training new team members) and the role they could play in the cleaning and facilities management sector.
And the potential is genuinely extraordinary.
Let’s start with the part that excites me first!
Picture a new employee arriving on site for the first time.
Today, that person spends weeks (at least) trying to hold an impossible amount in their head. Work plans, procedures, site locations, chemical dilutions, colour-coding, safety requirements and quality standards.
Now imagine they put on a pair of smart glasses instead.
The system identifies the room. It overlays the cleaning sequence. It flags any hazard before they reach it. It catches the wrong cloth colour in an area and corrects it in the moment - no infection risk raised. No human intervention needed.
Training stops being something you attend before you begin work and it becomes something you embed into each shift. Every task becomes coaching, every mistake becomes a lesson delivered the second it happens.
For sectors fighting skills shortages, rising complexity and thinning supervisory layers, this is not a minor improvement. It’s a different model entirely.
And now the part I keep coming back to in my research of this sector. The people who need this most are the ones who currently get the least. The frontline worker entering a complex environment with almost no buffer. We’ve spent years asking these people to hit the ground running in roles that have quietly become impossible to do well on day one.
This technology could be that buffer. There is serious funding available for exactly this kind of innovation. I understand completely why a learning and development team would fall over themselves to build it.
So why am I uncomfortable?
Now the part that will no doubt be keeping me awake.
Because the same device that supports the worker can just as easily monitor the worker.
The glasses that show you the next step are also watching everything you do. How long it took, whether you cut a corner, where you stood, who you were with and what you said.
So start asking the questions that the excitement skips over.
Who owns that data?
Who decides what gets collected?
What happens to that data if the company is sold and the data goes with it, into the hands of people who never made any promises to the worker who generated it?
These aren’t paranoid questions. We already have lived versions of this story.
In the healthcare sector it gets sharper still. If AI glasses can tell a nurse that a patient is due their insulin check, that’s a clear clinical good. But that same capability builds a permanent, granular record of human health. And unfortunately health data is the most commercially valuable, most weaponisable data there is. It’s not hard to imagine that record resurfacing later as an insurance premium, a risk score, a reason someone gets quietly priced out of cover because a system decided they hadn’t looked after themselves well enough.
I think about companies like Palantir when I think about where this leads. The technology is rarely the danger on its own. The danger is what it gets connected to, by whom, and for whose benefit and usually long after the people generating the data have lost any say in the matter.
I’m worried because we have been here before
Social media promised connection. Smartphones promised convenience. But neither arrived without consequences.
I’ll go further, and I’ll say it carefully because it’s a bold claim. I think there is now enough evidence to suggest we did real harm to the mental health of an entire generation of adolescents and that the timing lines up uncomfortably well with the arrival of the smartphone. I’m not stating it as settled fact. But it looks far too much like a pattern to dismiss. And almost nobody saw it coming, because the early conversation was all about what the technology could do, and we almost never about what it would do to us as a society. It’s a hard lesson to forget given the evidence today.
I also think a subtler risk underneath all of this, and it’s one I rarely read about or hear widely discussed.
If expert-level guidance is always available through a device, what happens to genuine career formed expertise?
Do we slowly stop building the deep, specialist knowledge that used to live in people because we no longer need to carry it? Do we become dependent on the system to the point where, if it fails or is taken away, the competence simply isn’t there anymore? I guess it’s abut like the change in students learning maths with or without calculators. We never did perish did we!
We could be designing a workforce that performs brilliantly with the glasses on and is hollowed out the moment they come off.
So where does that leave us?
I don’t think the question is whether AI wearables arrive. I’m fairly convinced they will, and within the next few years possibly.
The real question is whether we build the governance, the ethics and the human-centred leadership alongside them or will we rush the rollout and end up writing safeguards in hindsight, the way we always seem to, following too much harm being done to ignore.
Because there’s a strange twist in all of this. The more procedural knowledge we hand to machines, the more valuable the things machines can’t replicate become. Judgement. Adaptability. Creativity. Emotional intelligence. The capacity to stay steady, hopeful and humane while working alongside increasingly capable systems.
The future leader may not be the person who knows the most. It may be the person who can hold their nerve, their judgement and their humanity in a workplace where the machine knows more than they do.
That is a very different leadership challenge than the one most of our models were built for.
The future of work shouldn’t be a choice between human capability and technological capability. It has to be both.
The organisations that get that balance right may gain a real advantage. The ones that don’t may discover, too late, that efficiency is a poor substitute for trust.
So I’ll put it to you the way I am asking if myself.
Are AI wearables the next breakthrough in frontline development or the next frontier of workplace surveillance?
I think the answer depends less on the technology, and far more on the decisions we make right now, while we still have the chance and choice to make them.
What this means for facilities management operations in Dublin and Donegal
The scenario Annette describes above is not abstract. It is arriving in facilities management environments across Ireland and at a pace that most organisations are not operationally ready for.
In a high footfall corporate environment, say a financial services headquarters near the IFSC, a government department around Merrion Square, or a retail complex on Grafton Street, the training challenge for a cleaning operative is already significant. Multiple surface types. Variable public access hours. Specific colour coding protocols. Chemical dilution requirements. Audit trails that need to hold up to a SafeContractor inspection.
Add a healthcare environment in Dublin or a pharmaceutical facility in Donegal and the complexity becomes a system problem that individual training sessions, however well designed, cannot fully solve on their own.
That is the genuine case for the technology Annette describes. Not as a replacement for structured training, but as a support layer that operates in the moment of the task, when memory is most fallible and consequence is highest.
But the governance question she raises is not rhetorical. Dublin already has a concentration of technology companies, data processors and financial institutions in the Docklands and the Sandyford corridor who understand better than most what happens when data collection and commercial interest share the same infrastructure. The people most at risk of being monitored without meaningful consent are rarely the ones making the architectural decisions.

Why human centred training remains the foundation

The data governance question that the sector has not yet answered
Annette's framing of the governance problem is precise. The same system that provides real time coaching to a frontline operative in a Dublin hospital corridor or a Donegal local authority building also generates a continuous, granular record of that person's work, movements and performance.
In Ireland, the General Data Protection Regulation provides a legal framework for how that data must be handled. But legal compliance is not the same as ethical design. GDPR sets a floor. It does not prevent a system from collecting data that workers did not meaningfully consent to, being used in ways they did not anticipate, by parties who were not present when the original terms were agreed.

Annette closes with a point that deserves to be taken seriously. If procedural knowledge moves into devices, the scarcest capability in the next decade of facilities management will not be technical. It will be human.
The facility manager in Dublin who can hold the trust of a cleaning team through a significant operational change. The supervisor in a Letterkenny industrial site who can see what a data dashboard cannot. The leader who can make a call under pressure, stay steady with an uncertain team and maintain standards that the system cannot enforce.
